Nobody can ignore the fearful situation that has arrived due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Multiple pharmaceutical products are already marketed and some are in pipeline expecting to give us relief from this life-threatening disease. During this pandemic, not only allopathic medicines, but researchers are working in alternative and complementary medicinal systems to find out an effective solution against this deadly virus. People also started taking different traditional medicinal herbal remedies to boost their immunity to get a victory against the COVID-19 attack.

On April 29, 2021, the Union Ministry of AYUSH declared that AYUSH 64, “a poly-herbal formulation developed by the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS),” could implicitly aid in the treatment of “asymptomatic, mild and moderate COVID-19 infections as an adjunct to standard care”. [1] Many critics have criticized this decision because they doubt the efficacy of AYUSH 64. They believe no reliable scientific evidence supports the benefit of this formulation against COVID-19. [2] NitaNaturale has taken the initiation to jot down all the scientific journals’ published article details to uncover the possible treatment benefits of herbal ingredients present in AYUSH 64 against COVID-19.

Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) in collaboration with the Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India has launched a poly-herbal formulation, AYUSH–64 to treat malaria. In 1980, CCRAS has also patented this through National Research Development Corporation after evaluating the safety and efficacy of AYUSH–64 (Patent number 152863). [3, 4]

Clinical Trial details of AYUSH-64

Two human trials had performed to check the efficacy of AYUSH–64 as an anti-malarial drug. Initially, a generalized clinical trial designed had been made to evaluate the anti-malarial efficacy of AYUSH 64. In this study, 1442 positive malaria cases were enrolled at different research institutes and the Center of The Council located in different regions of India. The obtained study result found 89% treatment response that is comparable with Chloroquine and Primaquine (two most commonly used anti-malarial drugs). Later, a double-blind clinical trial was conducted on 178 malaria patients. The study result reported 95.4% drug efficacy. Both of these study findings reported no side effect or toxicity history with the prescribed dose. AYUSH–64 specifically acts against Plasmodium vivax and less efficaciously against Plasmodium falciparum. Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum are two common human malaria parasites. [3]

However, another animal research result observed that AYUSH–64 not efficacious against P. berghei, P. yoelii nigeriensis, P. cynomolgi B, and P. knowlesi, four other malaria parasites.
A pilot study had conducted between June 2018 and July 2019 at Raja Ramdeo Anandilal Podar Central Ayurveda Research Institute for Cancer, Mumbai for CCRAS. This trial aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of AYUSH 64 in clinically diagnosed Influenza-like illness (ILI). The study author concluded that AYUSH 64 along with standard care was safe and effective against ILI. This formulation also speeds up recovery. Researchers of this study also expected that this poly-herbal formulation might act as an adjuvant therapy with standard care for treating other viral infections that increase body temperature (fever).
It has been found that Katuki root extract inhibits allergen and platelet-activating factor (PAF)-induced bronchodilator. Thus, this herbal ingredient is effective in reducing the severity and frequency of asthma. This herb also can lower blood sugar levels. Apocynin is a phytochemical present in Katuki root extract. This phytochemical inhibits thromboxane A2 production to control inflammatory pathways to prevent inflammation. [11]

Kiratatikta whole-plant extract

Different Ayurveda formulations such as AYUSH 64, Diabecon, Mensturyl syrup, and Melicon V ointment contain this herbal ingredient. This medicinal plant has antipyretic, hypoglycaemic, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. Traditionally, a decoction of this herb is used for different therapeutic purposes due to its antimalarial, antifatigue, anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic, antifungal, antibacterial, antidiarrheal, anti-aging, cardio-stimulant, cardio-protectant, hepato-protective, hypoglycemic, and blood pressure, and blood sugar-lowering effects. Several scientific research studies have also evaluated the medicinal properties of Kiratatikta plant extract. No significant side effects were observed in any of the researches. [12]

Kuberaksha seed powder

Caesalpinia crista Linn. (C. crista), is the botanical name of this plant. This plant is commonly known as Fever nut. The led-colored, oblong-shaped seeds of this plant are 1.3 cm long. One or two seeds are present in one pod. Kuberaksha seed kernels are traditionally used to treat intermittent fever, asthma, and colic. An animal research study showed the antipyretic property of Kuberaksha seed powder and the effect is comparable with paracetamol.
How composition of AYUSH 64 effective against COVID-19?

Fever is the most common symptom of COVID-19. [15] Clinicians reported that the fever, dry cough, dyspnea, and fatigue associated with COVID-19 could turn to pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome in severely affected patients. Advanced age, ischemic and congestive heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are the most significant causes of COVID-19 associated death. [16] Asthma patients have a higher risk to develop severe COVID-19 symptoms. [17]

The poly-herbal composition of AYUSH 64 is effective in the treatment against fever. Different scientific researchers concluded from their research works that every ingredient of this formulation got antipyretic properties. Medical researchers have expected that anti-PAF activity could inhibit the activation of human mast cells that largely present in the lungs. These mast cells may have a contribution to COVID-19 severity. Mast cells induce inflammatory mediators release that increases the risk of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) associated with COVID-19. Researchers also assumed that anti-PAF activity along with anti-inflammatory action of some natural ingredients could act as a prophylactic treatment against COVID-19. [18] It has already been mentioned that AYUSH 64 containing Katuki root extract inhibits PAF and induces bronchodilation. Kiratatikta whole-plant extract of this formulation also has significant anti-inflammatory properties. These herbal ingredients may also reduce post-Covid complications like increased blood pressure, blood sugar, anxiety, and different metabolic disorders.

Research evidence

A research study showed that human coronaviruses (HCoVs) are commonly associated with ILI [19], though HCoVs have different strains. A pilot trial result found that administration of AYUSH 64 with standard care could decline ILI symptoms with a faster recovery rate than those only in standard care. This early recovery may happen because herbal ingredients present in AYUSH 64 help to restore metabolism and strengthen the immune status. This trial result also found that AYUSH 64 is a well-tolerated preparation. [6]

Another ongoing randomized trial is also going on under CSIR to evaluate the efficacy of AYUSH 64 as an adjunct treatment to standard of care. [20] We hope soon this study will be completed and the test result will be declared.

Indication

Experts suggest that the AYUSH- 64 is effective against mild to moderate COVID-19 cases with initial symptoms like fever, cough, malaise, headache, body ache, nasal congestion, nasal discharge, etc. Asymptomatic COVID-19 patients who have confirmed their disease through RT-PCR can preferably start AYUSH- 64 within 7 days of diagnosis of the condition. [21]

Dose

Two tablets of 500 mg twice daily are recommended for prophylactic treatment.

Experts suggest that AYUSH-64 be continued for a minimum of 14 days. However, if required, one can take this medicine up to 12 weeks based on the advice from a qualified AYUSH practitioner. Pregnant and lactating mothers should not take this formulation as yet now no studies are performed on them. [21]

NitaNaturale does not claim that AYUSH-64 is an effective treatment for COVID-19. But this blog can help readers to unfold the therapeutic benefits of each herbal ingredient present in AYUSH-64.

NitaNaturale promises its readers to continue describing the medicinal properties of AYUSH recommended plants for the herbal home garden. This is the second part of this theme. Five easy-to-grow herbal plants are discussed in this blog. I am sure those who have an interest in gardening will add at least one of these to their home garden.

Ginger (Adrak)

Adding the rhizome of the herbaceous ginger plant in various cuisines is act as a flavoring agent. Apart from adding flavor and enhance the taste of the foods, we used to make different ginger home remedies to relieve common health problems like nausea, vomiting, sore throat, and certain pain symptoms.

The vomiting preventing (antiemetic) benefits of ginger against motion sickness, pregnancy, and post-anesthesia had examined through several human trials. These trials result explored biological activities like antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-neuroinflammation effects of ginger. Recently, Herbal researchers have extended their research to explore the benefits of ginger in chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting and improvement in the quality of life of cancer patients by reducing their chronic fatigue condition. [1] The two of the human trials are registered under ClinicalTrials.gov to check the antiemetic effect of ginger for cancer patients who had received chemotherapy. [2, 3]

NitaNaturale has the aim to provide sufficient scientific evidence to readers to use ginger as a home remedy for treating following health issues. For this, I have evaluated different researches conducted from 1995 to 2019.

The anti-emetic benefit of ginger is effective to improve mild nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

Ginger promotes recovery of muscle strength after intense exercise. You can drink a cup of ginger tea after exercise for relaxing your muscles.

Migraine patients can also drink ginger tea along with a painkiller. A human trial result showed that ginger had an additive benefit with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in treating migraine attacks.

[4]

The ginger supplement claims that it is an effective remedy to reduce body fat. A clinical trial was registered under ClinicalTrials.gov, but the efficacy of ginger in weight management is still under discovery. [5]

Experts suggested that the anti-inflammatory property of ginger may help to reduce osteoarthritis pain. Six different human trials also showed that ginger is effective to reduce pain associated with osteoarthritis, dysmenorrhea, and acute muscle ache. [6]

Oxidative stress often worsens ulcerative colitis. Ginger has antioxidant properties. It may improve the quality of life of individuals with ulcerative colitis by reducing oxidative stress. [7]

Holy basil (Tulsi)

Holy basil or Tulsi is one of the most common plants in the Indian home garden. Although religious reason may play a role in the abundance availability of this plant, use this plant as a home remedy for treating multiple diseases cannot be ignored. Apart from Indian folk medicine, many ancient medicinal literatures had mentioned the application of holy basil to treat a wide range of blood, liver, digestive, metabolic, heart, kidney, mouth, throat, lungs, metabolic, reproductive, and nervous systems related disorders. [8]

You may aware of the vast medicinal properties of Tulsi. But NitaNaturale gives new information that Tulsi has antiplaque and antigingivitis efficacy also. [9] Many of us suffering from inflammation and bleeding gums (gingivitis), dental plaques. You can use Tulsi for dental and gum problems. A comparative study reported that Tulsi mouthwash formulation is equally effective as Chlorhexidine (a standard ingredient of commercial mouthwash formulations). [8, 10] Not only for adults, but you can also use Tulsi to take care of your child’s dental problems. [11]

Urbanity cannot stop growing plants. Gardening in lawn, terrace, or balcony is trendy home décor. Not only flowers, but people also cultivate fruits, vegetables, and even cereals to show their interest in organic farming. Many plants have well-established medicinal properties and they are easy to grow also. A wise selection of plants for your garden helps you to prevent diseases and promotes health without giving much effort.

In 2020, the National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) did a national campaign for encouraging all Indians to grow twenty medicinal plants in their home garden to promote home herbal therapy. [1] All these plants are easy to grow in pots or small areas on the land and do not require much care. Among the twenty enlisted plants, I will explain five herbal plant benefits in this blog.

The aim to explain the medicinal value of the enlisted plants is to reinforce the motive of the National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) and strengthen the journey of incorporating herbal medicinal plants in our daily life to keep ourselves healthy. Although we have to establish the exact dosing of these plants or plant parts by performing many more human trials though we know that these plants are safe for human use because all these enlisted plants are used for centuries.

Physically we unlocked ourselves from the lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic by...

Physically we unlocked ourselves from the lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic by accepting the social distancing and isolation for controlling the disease transmission. But these generalized measures unable to control the addition of new cases. WHO Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Dashboard displayed the current global situation of confirmed cases (55,326,907) and death rate (1,333,742) on 18th November 2020. [1] I do not want to generate fear among readers by presenting this data, but surely want to alert them about the necessity of boosting immunity. Many of us may use different natural remedies during this pandemic to improve our immune system functioning. But you may not know that the zed black colored tiny triangular shaped black seeds in combination with honey are an excellent natural remedy to fight against Coronavirus infection.

Evidential background for the recommendation

A mixture of Black seed and honey has the potential benefits to prevent as well as reduce the severity of Coronavirus infection. The Hindu ePaper published an article on their BusinessLine Page On 9th November 2020. The report mentioned that a multicentre randomized, controlled clinical trial showed a combination of 1 gm/kg/day of honey and 80 mg/kg/day of Black seed (scientifically known as Nigella sativa) treatment for 13 days was effective to clear viral load and alleviated symptoms of Coronavirus infection. This study result found that anti-diabetic, anti-hypertensive, cardio-protective, and broncho-dilatory properties of honey and the Black seed mixture could reduce the mortality rate among high-risk patients who had diabetes, hypertension, cardiac disorders, or asthma. [2] Based on this promising study result, Intas Pharmaceuticals Limited has recently launched its new patented tablet formulation, Thymotas. Thymoquinone and honey are the two primary ingredients present in Thymotas formulation.[3] Your Black seed is a rich source of Thymoquinone.

Why we have to depend on black seed and honey mixture or such natural remedies to deal with the Coronavirus pandemic?

Research and development departments of different Pharma companies are working hard to speed up to launch of vaccines as well as specialized treatment for COVID-19 infection as early as possible. But no licensed vaccine or specific treatment for coronavirus infection till now available in the market. In such conditions, nature offers a new remedy. A mixture of Black seed and honey to strengthen our immune system to fight against Coronavirus infection.

How a combination of black seed and honey is effective against Coronavirus infection?

Both Black seed and honey are common traditional remedies used in different airway disorders such as throat infections, bronchitis, flu, and pneumonia. [4,5] Moreover, Black seed oil is a useful treatment for chronic pain symptoms such as headache and back pain, etc. Therefore, these traditional applications indicate these two natural ingredients have the potential to use in COVID-19 infection. The scientific explanation is a little detailed. But this detailed explanation helps readers to understand why this combination they should include in their regular regimen during this pandemic.

The combination of bioactive phytochemicals presents in black seeds and the unique nutritional composition of honey not only an effective remedy to boost immunity for preventing Coronavirus infection but also has the potential to reduce the risk of severity of the symptoms of Coronavirus infected patients. Research experts recommended black seed containing Thymoquinone in combination with honey can be used as an adjuvant therapy with conventional standard prescribed treatment to obtain better therapeutic outcomes against Coronavirus infection. [3]

Thymoquinone is the chief bioactive phytochemicals present in Black seeds. Along with Thymoquinone, thymohydroquinone, thymol, dithymoquinone, carvacrol, and β-Pinene present in the Black seed are worked together and exert antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-diabetic, antihypertensive, and reno-protective effects. All these therapeutic benefits are essential treatment approaches for Coronavirus infected patients. [5] Whereas, the flavonoids and polyphenolic compounds present in honey may impart antimicrobial, antiviral, and antioxidant effects. [6]

Tips to use Black seed and honey

I hope you use the whole Black seed in your kitchen. Whole Black seed is a common flavoring spice often used for seasoning purposes. Whole Black seed is completely safe and does not have any side effects. According to the different research studies, I have found that Black seed oil has optimal therapeutic benefits in comparison with Black seed powder. Therefore, it is better to intake Black seed oil than the whole black seed to gain therapeutic benefits. But NitaNaturale will give additional tips for those who use the whole Black seed as a kitchen ingredient and do not want to spend extra to buy Black seed oil.

Take a teaspoon of Black seed and ground them freshly. Add the powder into a small cup of boiling water. Close the lid and wait for a minute. Then put off the flame. After 7 to 10 minutes, add one teaspoon of honey and enjoy the warm drink every morning. This small lifestyle change may give you protection not only from Covid-19 but helps to prevent other microbial infections, normalize blood glucose, cholesterol, and can also regulate blood pressure.

I have committed to explaining all the science behind the tips given in the NitaNaturale. Therefore, I just wanted to add that instead of using Black seed oil, fresh Black seed powder has enough efficacy to fight against Covid-19. I found during my research that a human trial result confirmed that boiled extract of Black seed had a potent bronchodilatory effect. [13] Another research also confirmed that ground black seed has an antimicrobial effect. [14] Even Black seed powder provides better plasma lipid control. [15]

Select Arabian origin-based organic Black seed, which is better compared to other origins in respect of therapeutic value. [16] Another important tip is to use Manuka honey, which has better therapeutic benefits than other varieties. [17]

What precautionary measures essential to know about Black seed and honey?

If any individual has an allergic tendency towards Bee products, then honey may not be a suitable option for them. During pregnancy, Black seed intake is not recommended as it can delay uterine contraction. Individuals who are under blood clotting medications should not take Black seed without consulting with the doctor. [18]

I hope you all agree that effective diabetes management does not possible...

I hope you all agree that effective diabetes management does not possible only by taking conventional hypoglycemic medicines. Diabetologists also recommend dietary modifications and physical activities to patients who have type II diabetes for better treatment outcomes. A scientific literature review concluded that the integration of herbs and superfoods act as an adjuvant therapy with conventional hypoglycemic medicine. Along with modified lifestyle patterns could extensively provide better diabetes management in terms of better blood glucose level control and reduce the risk of diabetes-associated complications. [1]

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is an abnormal health condition and indicative of a high blood sugar level. Broadly, diabetes is two types- type I and type II. Type – I diabetes occurs due to an immune system attack that damages the pancreatic cell and causes insufficient insulin production.

Type II diabetes is the condition in which the body unable to utilize or produce insulin. However, type II diabetes is not an auto-immune condition. Diabetes can occur at any age.

Apart from these two types, gestational diabetes is common among pregnant women, but after childbirth the disorder usually self-corrected. [2]

Diabetes become a global health concern

Administration of insulin is the primary treatment for type -I diabetes, whereas different conventional hypoglycemic medications prescribe to control type II diabetes. The uncontrolled diabetic condition leads to a variety of health complications, such as foot problems, nerve damage, heart disease, kidney failure, stroke attack, eye disorders, dental problems, etc. The incidence rate of diabetes increases day by day. It is assumed that worldwide 380 million people will be affected by diabetes by 2025. [3] This increasing incidence and diabetes-associated vital organ disorders make this a global health issue.

What are the Herbs and Superfood act as adjuvant therapy in diabetes management?

Obesity and dyslipidemia are common in type II diabetes and underlying causes of many complications. Following are some herbs and Superfood complement the blood-glucose-lowering effect of hypoglycemic medicines and also control the underlying complications. But I never suggest these can be used as a substitute for conventional diabetic treatment and stop using prescribed medicine without consultation with a doctor.

Cinnamon

The sweet aroma of cinnamon bark is not only a food flavoring spice but can improve glucose utilization in our body and increase insulin secretion. Cinnamon provides an ‘insulin-like’ effect. The bioactive ingredients present in cinnamon able to lower blood sugar level by following way:

increase cellular utilization of glucose (a type of sugar)

converts more glucose to glycogen and stored them for future utilization

reduce the conversion of glycogen to glucose by decreasing the activity of glycogen synthase kinase 3β

Increases the activity of glucosidase enzymes and thus reduces intestinal absorption of glucose

regulate the energy level by controlling intestinal enzymatic activity. [4]

Cinnamon can lower blood cholesterol through reducing triglyceride, total cholesterol, and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, whereas it increases HDL (good) cholesterol levels in the blood.

Cinnamon inhibits hepatic HMG Co-A reductase enzyme and reduces blood cholesterol level

The antioxidant effect of cinnamon reduces lipid peroxidation and inhibits 5-lipoxygenase enzyme activity in the liver and provides a cholesterol-lowering effect.

Cinnamon also has lipolytic activity and also promotes phagocytosis (engulf) of LDL cholesterol. [5]

Research result also suggested that cinnamon might effective to manage blood glucose level in pre-diabetic people. [6] If your blood test report showed glucose level is borderline, then I recommend you to add cinnamon in your daily diet as a preventive measure.

The selection of dose is critical and usually depends upon patient conditions like a diagnostic report, body weight, current medication, etc. However, I referred to different clinical studies and found 1 gm of cinnamon powder per day can control blood sugar in diabetic patients within three months. [5] But do not increase intake of cinnamon 6 gm per day to avoid any unpleasant side effects like liver toxicity. [7]

Tips to include cinnamon bark in your daily diet for better diabetes management

You can add a measured amount of cinnamon powder in oatmeal and muesli as a flavoring agent and also for better diabetes management. Cinnamon aroma enhances the flavor of different sweet confectionery recipes. But if you want to grasp its bioactive property to get optimum health benefits of cinnamon then prepare herbal tea by adding three inches of cinnamon bark in a cup of hot water and close the lid for 10 minutes and enjoy the drink. Cinnamon has a long shelf-life and easily store for 4 to 5 years in an air-tight container. Another useful tip that I want to share with readers is to select the Ceylon variety of cinnamon to get the best treatment outcome.

Fenugreek

I recommend fenugreek seed solution for newly detected diabetic patients to control their glycemia and dyslipidemia conditions.

Fenugreek contains soluble fibers such as glucomannan fiber restrict sugar absorption in your gut.

Fenugrecin and trigonelline are two alkaloids present in fenugreek have hypoglycemic effects

Fenugreek stimulates the pancreas to release insulin due to an amino acid (4 hydroxyisoleucine) present in this herbal ingredient. [8]

Tips to include fenugreek seeds in your daily diet for better diabetes management

Take 25 mg of fenugreek seeds and add them into a glass of water. Keep it overnight for soaking and drink the solution next morning in an empty stomach. Continue this therapy for one month. But monitor your blood glucose level regularly and maintain a dairy to keep the record of your blood sugar level. A human trial result reported that fenugreek seed solution significantly reduced overall cholesterol levels. [9]

Blueberry

Blueberry is a perfect Superfood for diabetic diet due to the following reasons:

Blueberry has a low glycemic index and.

Normalize blood sugar level by reducing insulin resistant

It also acts against obesity and metabolic disorders. [10]

Tips to include blueberry fruits in your daily diet for better diabetes management

Patients with type II diabetes can maintain their blood sugar level within a normal limit by adding blueberry in their daily diet. A bowl of blueberry can be a diabetic snake item. You can also mix Acai berries, Cranberries in your Blueberry bowl to make it a colorful and antioxidant-rich diabetic healthy diet to support the vital functioning of your body.

Moringa

Moringa becomes a more discussed Superfoods nowadays due to its multiple health benefits. One of the significant benefits of this herb is blood glucose maintenance within a normal limit. The glucose tolerance test has proven this benefit of moringa. The phytonutrients present in this Superfood effectively reduce post-prandial hyperglycemia and hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) levels. Moringa exerts an antihyperglycemic effect due to the following reasons:

Delays the intestinal glucose absorption

Increases glucose uptake in skeletal muscles and reduces glucose production in the liver by regulating enzymatic activity. [11]

Tips to include Moringa in your daily diet for better diabetes management

Leaves, seeds, and pods of Moringa have antidiabetic properties. You can add moringa leaves, and fruits in your soup preparation. Moringa powder is available in different organic shops, but you should keep your eyes on the authenticity of the product to avoid any adulteration. You add 500mg moringa powder in green smoothie preparation and drink this healthful appetizer any time a day. But you should monitor blood sugar levels every day to avoid hypoglycemia.

Role of modified lifestyle measures in diabetes management

Physical activity has a positive role in diabetes management. Brisk walking, aerobic exercise, and swimming are different physical activities diabetic patients can include in their daily life to maintain blood glucose levels. But I recommend yoga should be an integral modified lifestyle measure for the diabetic patient for better management of overall health condition.

The systematic approach of yoga is not only limited to physical health but also influence mental well-being. Yoga can advocate mind-full eating and stress-free life, which are two essential parameters to prevent raising blood glucose levels. [12] The following are significant benefits of yoga in diabetes management:

Yoga can regulate eating patterns

Practicing yoga support mind-body connection, which improves self-awareness

Yoga brings modest weight loss

Regular yoga practice can significantly reduce both fasting and post-prandial blood sugar. [13]

Yoga is also an effective diabetes preventive measure.

How to practice yoga for diabetes management?

I have researched and found the following yoga schedule that can lower down both fasting and post-prandial blood sugar. But you have to follow this schedule regularly. You can observe a noticeable change in the blood test report and health parameters within six months.
